What identification do I need to bring to the notary public?
California recognizes the following types of identification as valid if it is current or issued within the last five years -
- California Driver license or ID card
- U.S.A. Passport
- Driver license or ID card issued by another state
- A driver's license issued by a Canadian or Mexican public agency authorized to issue drivers' licenses
- US Military Identification card
- Foreign passport stamped by the INS (USCIS)
- For identification of prisoners in custody, inmate ID issued by the California Department of Correction
All identification cards must contain a photo, a physical description, a signature, and a serial number. An international driver license cannot be accepted as proof of identification.
Identity of the signer may also be established by one or two credible witness or subscribing witness.
